What is gum mastik?

Gum Mastik is a resin that is extracted from the Mastik tree, scientifically known as Pistacia Lentiscus. The Mastik tree is primarily found in the Mediterranean region, including Greece, Turkey, and North Africa. The resin is harvested by making small incisions on the bark of the tree, allowing the gum to ooze out and dry in the sun.

The resin has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. It was used for treating digestive problems, respiratory issues, dental problems, and even as a remedy for urinary tract infections. Gum Mastik also has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.

In addition to its medicinal properties, Gum Mastik is widely used in the food industry as a flavoring agent and as a thickening agent in some products. It is also used in the cosmetics industry as an ingredient in toothpaste, mouthwash, and skincare products.

Due to its unique flavor and properties, Gum Mastik is considered a delicacy in some cultures. It is often chewed as gum or added to recipes for a distinctive taste. Gum Mastik is also commonly used in traditional sweets and desserts, including Turkish Delight and Greek Baklava.
